For blind people in the kitchen the first thing need to be think about is safety. The danger may come from the knife, fire and hot pan. Therefore, we choose to use an ultrasonic ranger sensor to detect the distance between fingertip and the knife while cutting. It is light weighted and can sense the distance sensitively. We use another temperature sensor to work along the ultrasonic sensor to detect the temperature change in surrounding to avoid touching the fire or hot pan accidently. These two functions also include a buzzer to notify the user when he or she get to close to the knife or the hot source. Then we use a camera to capture the image of the food along with Google Vision API to help the user to identify the food and check whether the food is well cooked. And finally, we implemented speech interaction using Bluemix Watson API to allow the user control the device by vocal command, such as set the timer, check the food, identify the food and etc. In order to put all the functions together and having them work simultaneously, we used multi-threading and did a lot of testing on the final model.
